How to add products on Shopify in 10 simple steps

If you are starting to create an online store with Shopify , and you have already chosen which products to sell on Shopify, it is time to add all your product information correctly.

In this post, we will teach you how to add products on Shopify step by step, and what information you need to include to help you get your first sales.

To add products on Shopify, first log into your Shopify account and admin, head to the left bar and click Products > Add Product .

Remember that you do not need to add all the details that appear here, but you do need to add all the information about your product that you think will be necessary for the user to understand your product. Below we indicate the different sections when adding products in Shopify.

Title and Description

The first thing is to add a name to your product and write a detailed description . Take the opportunity to add lists, put the keyword in bold or add an image in the description.

Descriptions inform and persuade visitors to make a purchase, so you have to know your product well and what it can bring to your visitor.

If you use a Dropshipping service like Oberlo, it is best to rewrite the description provided to fit your brand. Descriptions also help with search engine optimization (SEO). When adding a description and details, add keywords related to your product that will help rank your product on Google.

Multimedia elements

You can then add multimedia elements to the product, such as images, videos, or even 3D models.

You can do this by dragging and dropping the files, from your computer or adding them from a URL. Visual elements help your customers decide if they want to buy, so it is best to have at least 3 or 4 photos that show the product from different angles as well as a photo of a person or target target using the product.

Add price to your products on shopify

Now you have to add a sales price for your product , which will be what your customers pay.

The comparison price is the original price of a product that is on sale and will be shown as strikethrough on the product page. Offering a reduction or offer on the sales price encourages and shows customers a feeling of a lower price.

If the product is not on sale, you can leave this field blank.

The ” cost per item ” is what it cost you to make or buy the product.

If you resell a product , enter the price you paid the manufacturer, excluding taxes, shipping, or other costs.

If it is a product manufactured by you , enter the price based on your labor and material costs, among others.

This helps you calculate the profit margin on sales, generate reports and view statistics about your products.

Finally, check the “charge tax on the sale of this product” box if the product is subject to tax in your country.

Inventory

Under the inventory column, you will see “inventory managed by.” Select “Shopify” if you manage inventory. If you use a third-party app to manage inventory, you can select that option here.

The “unique reference number” (SKU) is a unique value for the product. SKUs help you organize your inventory and fulfill orders.

You will also see an option to enter a barcode. Some sales channels, such as Google or Amazon, require a barcode before your product can be published.

When “ track quantity ” is checked, the Shopify admin tracks the inventory for this product. If you do not check this box, the quantity option will not be available. If you only have a specific amount of stock, then it is important to keep track of inventory so that an item does not go out of stock.

Likewise, if you are sure to keep up with demand and have stock soon, you can select “ Continue selling when stock runs out .” Otherwise, do not select this option if you cannot provide the product.

Set up shipping

Under shipping, select ” This is a physical product ” if this is an item that needs to be shipped. Turn it off for digital products or services, or for products that do not need to be shipped.

If you want to send the product internationally with Shopify Shipping , also known as cross-border sales, enter the Customs Information of the Country or Region of origin.

Next, enter the harmonized system (HS) code. If you are not sure what it is, you can start typing your product in the search field to search for a specific HS code by your product keywords.

Having a shipping strategy is very important for your business, take the time you need.

Variants

The Variants section allows you to add filters for the different variants of your product, such as color, size, material or style.

Select “This product has multiple options, such as different sizes or colors” if applicable. Each product option is known as a “variant.” Instead of adding products in Shopify separately, it is ideal to use variants and options.

In ” Options “, enter a name of the option and the names of the different available variants, separating each of them with a comma. You can continue adding options for other variants by pressing the « Add another option » button until you complete the configuration of your product.

Search engines (SEO)

When adding products to Shopify, it is very important to take into account the description that people who are searching for a certain keyword related to your product will see.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques and strategies used to improve the visibility and positioning of a website in the search results of search engines, such as Google, Bing or Yahoo.

The “Search Engine Posting” (SEO) section is a preview of how the product will appear in the results of search engines like Google. Click “Edit” to make changes to the preview.

The goal of SEO is to increase the quantity and quality of organic traffic a website receives through search results.

Product status

The sales channels are the different platforms on which you will sell your products (through your online store or a physical point of sale (Point of Sale). Select the box of the channels in which the product will be available.

Product organization

When adding products in Shopify, you can also group products into a collection .

Collections group products together and make it easier for customers to find them in your online store. Use the « Collections » field to add the product directly to a manual collection.

Finally, “ Tags ” are keywords associated with your product that allow you to search directly in your online store or to create automated collections.

Product status

Finally, once you have reviewed all the details of your product, it is time to publish the product to your Shopify store. Select “ Active ” under “ Product Status ” at the top of the page. If your store is already active, active products will appear in your online store immediately.

If you do not yet have an online store or do not want to launch your product, select “ Draft ”.

Products are automatically saved in “Draft” mode until you activate them. Finally, don’t forget to click ” Save ” and your product will be added to your Shopify admin.
